Ignacio Galan graduated as an Industrial Engineer from Escuela Superior Industrial ICAI of Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (Madrid). He holds a Degree in Business Administration and Foreign Trade from ICADE at Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (Madrid) and a Degree in Business Administration and Foreign Trade from the Escuela de Organización Industrial (EOI) of Madrid.
His professional career started in 1972 at the Tudor company where he has held several management positions.
At the beginning of the 90’s he joined ITP (Industria de Turbo Propulsores) where, as General Manager and Director, he led the improvements in the design, manufacture and maintenance of aviation engines and gas turbines. In this period, he incorporated workers and technicians from the shipyards of Bilbao (which were then undergoing heavy restructuring) into the company.
Between 1993 and 1995 he was Chairman of the German consortium Eurojet, where he implemented a programme of aeronautical turbines for commercial airlines that are nowadays fitted in the major Airbus and Boeing aircrafts.
In 1995, he became the Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Móvil (now Vodafone España), facing the liberalization of the telecommunications industry in Spain.
He is now Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Iberdrola. His arrival in the Company in 2001 marked the beginning of one of the most successful and complete corporate transformations of the last decade. His decisive support of international expansion and clean energy led Iberdrola to become one of the four biggest power companies world-wide –with a footprint covering 40 countries and made up of companies such as ScottishPower in the United Kingdom and Elektro in Brazil– the second largest completely private company in the sector and global leader in wind energy.
